The MD-ICCCR is excited to share that a new publication written by our Director Peter T. Coleman is the lead article in the latest issue of Negotiation Journal. The paper was also the recipient of the 2017 Best Theoretical Paper Award at the International Association for Conflict Management (IACM) conference last summer. It introduces two "meta-competencies" for conflict resolution across different contexts: Conflict Intelligence (CIQ) and Systemic Wisdom (SW). The resulting approach offers a platform for integrating many of the different strategies and tactics for resolving conflict and facilitating constructive change that currently constitute the field.
The paper suggests that the standard models and methods for conflict resolution are particularly challenged today in the face of the world’s increasing complexity, dynamism, and volatility, and offers a new framework for addressing these challenges. Based on insights from research in complexity science, psychology, and peace and conflict studies, it suggests a set of skills and competencies that constitute each of the two meta-competencies. The paper posits that CIQ and SW are especially relevant for helping individuals resolve current conflicts and promote more constructive and peaceful relations in the future.
