Advanced Certificate in Cooperation & Conflict Resolution

Outline and Purpose

The Advanced Certificate in Cooperation and Conflict Resolution comprises five required core courses including a semester-long internship and one elective course for a total of 16 credits. This level of study is aimed at developing the core competencies necessary for reflective scholar/practitioners working in conflict resolution and other related fields.

These competencies include:

• A comprehensive understanding of theory and research in cooperation; conflict resolution, including the role of power and of groups; negotiation, mediation, cross-cultural communication and social change
• Strong self-reflective interpersonal, intergroup and cross-cultural conflict resolution, problem-
• solving and intervention skills
• The application of theoretical and practical learning to areas of individual interest such as school/community conflict resolution programs, organizational assessment and systems design, and work in international relations

As a result, certificate holders should become scholar-practitioners able to integrate and implement both applied and academic work in conflict resolution.

Sequence of courses for the Certificate:

• Adaptive Negotiation & Conflict Resolution (ORLJ 5340) promotes negotiation, understanding, and adaptivity across negotiation situations and introduces students to key concepts and frameworks in negotiation and conflict resolution.
• Effective Mediation: Standard & Adaptive Practices (ORLJ 5341) focuses on learning the conditions under which mediation is most effective, appropriate and feasible; identify basic differences in the task versus relationship nature of the cases presented; and employ strategies that are fitting and conducive to mediating a variety of cases.
• Fundamentals of Cooperation & Conflict Resolution (ORLJ 6040) presents a comprehensive review of the major theories and research in conflict resolution, both historical and current.
• Conflict Resolution: Advanced Methods for Identity and Intergroup Conflict (ORLJ 6350) delves deeper into the nuances of conflict and conflict resolution, especially as they relate to identity and intergroup conflict. Students also learn about and practice more complex models of third-party interventions, such as multi-party mediations.
• Organizational Internship (ORLJ 5012) focuses on implementing conflict resolution knowledge and skill through a semester-long internship at an organization within the MD-ICCCR network.
• In addition to these five required core courses, students choose an elective from the wide array of Center offerings.

The Advanced Certificate can be applied for through the Teachers College Office of Admissions.
